“I love this record and can’t wait for the world to hear it. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to us.” Allen and Russo were also on common ground musically. When it was time to get serious about Sitting in a Tree, they hauled their love for rock and reggae into a tornado of diverse influences. Allen’s explanation is simple and modest: “We wanted to make a fun record and play music we like to listen to. We wanted to make sure people liked us in Hawaii so we could play beach cities,” Russo counters with a laugh. The album pinballs unpredictably from identity crisis assault rock (“Miss America”) to glum campfire balladry about collapsed love (“Too Fucked Up”). Sitting in a Tree is blunt force trauma autobiography, a catalogue of the heavenly ups and hellish downs Allen and Russo share together, but it’s no preachy cautionary tale. “Yeah, I was abused as a kid,” Allen notes, “so what? We’re all a little fucked up. The main message of this record is you’re not alone—so no worries.” Clearly, Allen—who Russo accurately describes as the “black version” of sunny side up Gwen Stefani—rarely minces words. When she explains her concussive lyrics by shrugging “Life isn’t a poem,” there’s nothing not to get. Russo adds “Yeah, this record is very personal.” Get ready for Scott and Aimee and their full- frontal assault on the senses. Buckling up won’t remotely prepare you.

It is a holiday with a complex history and fusion of old traditions. This view of death started with Mesoamerican cultures such as the Olmecs more than 3,000 years ago. Mesoamericans believed that during this time of the year, the boundaries that separate the living and the dead weaken and that the deceased could visit the living. Unlike the Spaniards, who viewed death as the end of life, the natives viewed it as the continuation of life, as a blend together cycle. Instead of fearing death, they embraced it. To them, life was a dream and only in death did they become truly awake. The holiday is traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. Because it is a holiday with a complex history, its observance varies from region to region and also by degree of urbanization. In the small towns of Mexico a candlelight procession to the cemetery is held by most of the families on the eve of the celebration. At the gravesites family members spruce up the gravesite, decorate it with flowers and enjoy a meal. Offerings are brought to the graves and include the favorite foods, beverages, toys, and personal belongings of the departed so that they might enjoy them again. Family members spend the night at the cemetery and share the memory of their loved ones by telling stories about them. The celebration is not a mournful one, but rather a time to share with family and friends and to visit with the souls of the departed. The warm communal environment, the colorful setting, and the abundance of food, drink and the presence of friends and family members has pleasant overtones for most observ ers. This festive interaction between the living and the dead is a way of celebrating that life was and still is shared with the departed and is also recognition of the cycle of life and death. This cycle is the cycle of all forms of existence.

Founded in 1798 by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, successor to Padre Junipero Serra, the Mission was named after St. Louis IX, King of France, who lived during the 13th century. The history of the San Luis Rey area reflects five periods of occupation: Luiseno Indian, Spanish Mission, Mexican Secularization, American Military, and Twentieth Century Restoration.
Construction of the present Mission church began in 1811 and was completed in 1815. The design is cruciform with the dimensions measuring 30′ high, 165′ long and 27′ wide. The solitary bell tower, which is the cornerstone to the entire mission quadrangle, is 75′ high. Adobe, lime plaster, wooden timbers, fired clay bricks, and roof tiles comprise the primary building materials. The architecture is Spanish Colonial combining Baroque and Classical styles with Moorish influences.

PRESENT – The church, a National Historic Landmark, is open daily to visitors via the museum, which oversees its restoration and the care of its collections. Although painted over through the years, the decorative designs, taken from textiles and patterns in books, are original. The church at San Luis Rey is recognized as the most unique and one of the most beautiful in the mission chain. It is the largest of the 21 California missions and the only one adorned with a wooden dome and cupola. Unique also to San Luis Rey are the side altars and the Madonna Chapel which originally served as a mortuary chapel.

But it’s more than just the name of a walk – it describes the amazing progress we’re making together to defeat this disease. Since 1993, nearly six million walkers have raised more than $400 million through Making Strides. In 2009 alone, nearly 700,000 walkers across the country collected $60 million to help fight breast cancer.

Making Strides is your opportunity to honor breast cancer survivors, educate women about breast cancer prevention and early detection, and raise funds and awareness to help achieve a day when no one will have to hear the words “You have breast cancer.” The majority of Making Strides events take place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. They are typically five kilometers (3.1 miles) or five miles in length.

The American Cancer Society has a presence in more than 3,400 communities across the country and is the only organization available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help people touched by cancer. Breast cancer is the number one reason people call the Society. When you support Making Strides, you are helping the Society seek better ways to prevent, detect, and treat breast cancer, as well as provide help and hope to people facing the disease.

Sign up online for Making Strides and enjoy a day of exercise, camaraderie, entertainment, food, and most importantly, a chance to honor someone you love who’s been affected by this disease. Together, we will make strides toward a future where breast cancer will no longer threaten those we love!

We advocate health and wellbeing for all and create collaborative relationships with other stakeholder groups wherever we can so as to further sustained change in behavior and development. Our community based health programs involve education in nutrition, hygiene, healthy environments, and disease prevention – including mosquito net distribution. In response to an unfortunately frequent need, we have built an award winning capacity in Emergency Preparedness and have delivered practical, locally based Emergency Responses. SurfAid follows the organizational values of accountability, transparency and partnership. Our activities epitomize the universal human values expressed through local and global citizenship – empathy and compassion, respect for community, social justice and equity for all, economic, environmental and social sustainability, and a belief that we can all make a difference.
